Fragment of a Walking Man   "Fragment of a Walking Man"
a figurative sculpture
by Laury Dizengremel

One of my earliest sculptures. The original maquette in bronze (entire - not a fragment, and titled "Le Survivant" - The Survivor) was stolen from the Town Hall in Chelsea, London during an exhibition in 1994. I'd made the original maquette prior to modelling a lifesize version which I never cast due to lack of funds in those days (!). My mentor and teacher Martine Vaugel cast her lifesize version (we'd both worked with the same model), and it is one of her signature pieces.

I no longer had a mould. I thought it was gone forever! Then, a few summers ago, a Californian friend told me he'd salvaged "an odd piece of bronze" from my Venice studio when I left years ago... and I literally cried with joy to behold what he presented: the first reject from my first efforts in the foundry, discarded, battered and still raw from being cast... a bronze fragment, which I cleaned up and decided is one of those happy accidents of life - as well as a record of my early work.
