Artists of the Silk
Road Sculpture Series Index Page This major series - consisting of several sub-series, was started in my MFA studio in Canterbury and in a sculpture studio in Chongqing, China during 2005 and 2006 in the context of my Master of Fine Art international practice (MFA) degree course. I am still working on new sub-series inspired by my original series. Subsequent exhibitions of the entire series, or elements of the series: - "Conversations", degree show, September 2006 - Canterbury Festival, October 2006 - October 2006 to PT - three monumental statues exhibited at Broomhill Sculpture Park in Devon, England - April - June 2007 - Beltane Gallery, Scotland - April 2008 to PT - 102 resin sculptures on 21 platforms and at Broomhill Sculpture Park, in Devon, England and featured in the North Devon Festival - December 2008 - March 2009 - small sub-series at Dana Gallery, Missoula, Montana - November 2008 - March 2009 - small sub-series at Grizzly Claw, Seeley Lake, Montana - February 2009 - 1st Prize at Wine & Chocolate Exhibition (First Valley Bank, Seeley Lake, Montana), prize awarded by co-curator of Montana Museum of Art & Culture, Kay Grisson Kiely who commented: "This piece is riveting--as if this earthen form is being pulled up from the earth. I love the expressionistic and delicate contour of the sculptural body. Stylistically, it reminds me of Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti's rendering of the human form--stretched out with its limbs subtle and elongated. Her facial expressions are exaggerated while juxtaposed with an abstracted and somewhat undefined body form. It's poetic and sensuous. Love the proportions. It speaks to me." Note that all of these sculptures are available for purchase by art collectors, either in their original media or in bronze. Details are shown on the larger view image pages which you will find by clicking on the links or thumbnails. The overall series consists of: 1. An original series of 12 miniature busts created in Canterbury and in China which I made moulds of for my figures (see below) and cast into bronze as limited editions. Shown here are just three of them. Click here to see all 12 and larger pics of these busts. 2. Two original series of 12 figures each in shredded paper and plaster, created in Canterbury. They were originally left raw, then later hand painted in a number of colours using a variety of media (inks, watercolours, acrylics). 3. Another original series of 14 figures created in Chongqing in shredded paper and plaster (only 12 were used to make the moulds for the next series of 100 figures, and only 8 of which are shown here). This series was hand-painted also. All of these originals were destroyed in the moulding process to create the small bronze and resin series described below (see points 6 to 8). 4. An original series of 100 figures, some in mixed media (plaster/herculite and jute scrim) and some in cement and scrim. Click here to see more pictures of the small figures in the making and in installation scenarios. 5. An original series of 3 monumental statues in resin, approx. 3m 50 in height, currently available for purchase. Click here for more pictures at Broomhill, or here for pictures of the trio in the making. 6. An original series of 31 small bronzes (each a unique piece), four of which were left unmounted and the remaining 27 were divided onto 9 platforms, presenting a different "tableau of artists", available for purchase directly from Laury or via Broomhill Sculpture Park in North Devon, UK. Click here for pictures of bronzes at Broomhill. 7. One series of 102 small resins (no two heads and no two bodies the same.... each artist finished with different adjustments and treatments to head/body positions) which was then divided onto 21 separate platforms currently available for purchase for indoor placement only (resin will not last indefinitely out of doors) or can be cast into bronze for outdoor / indoor placement. Click here for pictures of the resin "tableau of artists platforms" at Broomhill. 8. Two further series of 102 small resins, not assembled into tableaux as above, but left as individual artists, some of which are being further added to (with jute/PVA/modelling paste) and all of which are individually hand-painted by the artist, with a variety of finishes and colours being experimented with in unique sub-series. Available for sale individually or in small colour-coordinated sets or sub-series. Click here for pictures of these sculptures which are available for purchase directly from the artist.
